“Why does my cat have diarrhea unexpectedly?” It’s a common question among cat owners because it’s not easy to care for them.

You must be saddened if your cat continues to have watery stools and lose weight, but you are unsure whether this is due to Diarrhea or not. Diarrhea in cats is undoubtedly complicated due to the numerous factors that must be considered. Furthermore, depending on the severity of your cat’s Diarrhea, you can choose whether to take it to the vet or try home treatment.

What Are The Indications Showing Your Cat Has Diarrhea?

Diarrhea in cats is usually regarded as a sign of a digestive problem. Your cat has Diarrhea if you see that their stool is more loose and watery than normal. In some cases, mucus and blood may be present and a color change. Cats can have acute Diarrhea that arises quickly and lasts a few weeks or chronic Diarrhea when the problem lasts more than three weeks.

Your furry friend will be considered as having Diarrhea when it has these flowing symptoms and signs:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Losing weight
  • Higher water requirement
  • Being tired or weaker
  • Increasing the frequency of toileting
  • Being hard to defecate
  • Appetite reduction

Why Does Your Cat Have Diarrhea All of a sudden?

A variety of underlying conditions can cause diarrhea in cats. Here are some common causes of Diarrhea in cats you can refer to:

Cat’s daily activities

Diarrhea is the result of cats’ daily activities like hunting or scavenging. When cats swallow something unusual, the overgrowth of bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins in their digestive tracts may occur. But don’t be concerned; it only causes mild and transient Diarrhea.

Cat’s diet is altered suddenly

An abrupt change in their diet also causes Diarrhea in cats as any new food can initially disrupt the digestive system. You don’t need to be concerned because this is how your cat adapts to the change. If you take good care of your cat, its stool will return to normal after a few days.

Unsuitable cat’s food

Examine the nutrition facts of your cat’s commercial products to ensure that they do not contain too much carbohydrate and are low in protein compared to what a cat requires. A nutrient imbalance can promote the growth of gut bacteria that is abundant enough to cause inflammation and, as a result, Diarrhea.

You feed your cat your own food

If you feed your cats your own food such as chocolate, avocado, onions, garlic, that is why your cat has Diarrhea. Cats can not eat these ingredients because they are poisonous to them.

Rapidly alter their surroundings or daily routine

Changing their environment or daily routine is also a common cause of Diarrhea in cats. They are too sensitive to have a trip in a car, live in a new house, or even interact with a new person. These activities are extremely stressful for them, and the stress causes hormones and chemicals to be released within them, resulting in Diarrhea.

What to do when your cat has Diarrhea?

When you’ve figured out what makes your cat have Diarrhea, it’s no longer a tricky thing to find the solution to help your pet.

If your cat has mild Diarrhea, is not vomiting, is eating and drinking, and does not appear to be in too much pain, you can do the following things to try some home treatment:

  • Alter commercial food for your cat or change their diet. You should choose products that are low in fiber and do not contain the ingredients that your cat is allergic to.
  • Encourage your feline friend to drink more water by constantly filling their water bowl with fresh, clean water and adding more broth to their cooked meal. If you don’t have much time to do that on a regular basis, another option is to use canned food instead of cooked food. It is easier to combine an extra tablespoon of warm water with the canned food for the cat.
  • Feed them probiotics to boost the healthy bacterial population, which aids in the recovery of your cat’s digestive system because normal digestion requires healthy bacterial populations in a cat’s intestinal tract.
  • You can give your cat anti-diarrhea medication. Not all anti-diarrhea medications can be used without the advice of a veterinarian; however, some on the market contain kaolin-pectin, which is safe for cats. It is necessary to read the instructions carefully before feeding your cat; do not forget to do so.

On the other hand, in some cases, your cat gets the Diarrhea problem so serious that it needs to be addressed by a veterinarian. Take your cat to the veterinary clinic immediately when you see your cat have these indications of Diarrhea in cats.

  • Your cat is too young or too old, so their digestion isn’t strong enough to allow them to recover on their own. They are so vulnerable that you should enlist the assistance of a veterinarian.
  • When your cat’s symptoms are so strange, and you are not sure whether it is a medical condition that predisposes him to the effects of dehydration.
  • Suppose your cat is experiencing multiple symptoms at the same time, such as vomiting, lethargy, depression, pain, or exhibits. In this case, you must contact a veterinarian immediately to avoid a situation in which your cat is exhausted to the point of death.
  • Diarrhea can be profuse, watery, explosive, or sporadic. Or you notice your cat has bloody or dark and tarry Diarrhea.

Taking care of a cat is difficult because it cannot express its emotions verbally when it is in distress. Diarrhea in cats is unfortunately common because they are so sensitive when they are a part of human life. Obtaining the information above will benefit you as you grow and protect yourself from emergencies.
